Navigating Out of Network Care

Our health care system is challenging to navigate and often does not serve clients' or practitioners' best interests.  The benefits of working with an out of network provider include getting more time with the provider during your visits, receiving more individualized care, knowing exactly what your costs will be up-front with no surprises, and being able to choose your provider based on your preferences and needs.  Here are some recommendations on how to get the most out of your benefits when seeing an out of network provider.

Submit a Superbill to Your Insurance Company.

A superbill is a receipt from your practitioner that provides the insurance company details of the services provided each session.  Once you send the superbill to your insurer, the reimbursement will go directly to you.  You may contact your insurance provider or visit their website for instructions on how to submit.

Ask Your Insurance Company if they Provide Out-of-Network Benefits.

While seeing an out of network provider has higher up front costs than a typical physical therapy copay, you will always know exactly what you are paying rather than getting a surprise bill in the mail.
